Peter Feldstein is an artist from Oxford, Iowa. He retired in 2006 from his long-time position of Professor of Art at the University of Iowa where he taught photography and digital imaging. In 1984, Peter Feldstein set out to photograph every resident in the town where he lives – Oxford, Iowa. In 2005, he began the process again and his friend Stephen Bloom, a journalism professor at the University of Iowa, joined him this time to interview each person. The result is a triptych of two photographs, one taken in 1984, one in 2005, and a panel of text culled from an interview conducted by Stephen and Peter. These fascinating studies of human nature and society are humorous, sad and incredibly honest. The Oxford Project has received critical acclaim and coverage in The New York TimesSmithsonian MagazineWashington Post, ABC World News Tonight, and National Public Radio’s Weekend America and Michael Feldman’s Whad’Ya Know? Peter also creates black and white and color inkjet prints with a technique called “cliche-verre,” which involves etching or painting directly on a sheet of clear film, which is then scanned and printed. The end result (dramatic black and white and color images), with interesting line, texture and pattern has the effect of a drawing or drypoint print. Peter received his M.A. and M.F.A. from the University of Iowa. His photographs are in the corporate collections of Maytag Corporation, Covenant Medical Center, Pioneer Hi-Bred International, Coca-Cola, and Iowa Network Services. Peter’s work has been included in group shows at the Center for Creative Photography in Tucson, Arizona, the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis and the Rhode Island School of Design.
